In the second book of the Bluegrass Series, Danielle De Luca, an ex-beauty queen who is not at all what she seems, leaves the streets of New York after tracking the criminals out to destroy her. She travels to Keeneston, Kentucky to make her final stand by the side of her best friend, McKenna Mason. While in Keeneston, Danielle meets the quiet and mysterious horse farm owner Mohtadi Ali Rahman, a modern day Prince. Can Mo protect Dani from the group of powerful men in New York? Or will Dani save the Prince from his rigid, loveless destiny?

I really enjoyed Bluegrass State of Mind where we met McKenna and Will. McKenna saw her boyfriend and a bunch of high ranking politicians in a bit of a precarious situation and went on the run when they tried to silence her. Before hitting the road, she told her friend everything that happened. That friend being Dani, stayed behind to try to get as much dirt and information as she could before she met up with McKenna. Risky Shot is Dani’s story and if I’m being completely honest, it was a big let down.

The story jumped ahead and didn’t really give you any sense of depth. Dani’s love interest is Mo, someone we sort of meet in the previous book. However, he might as well have still been a secondary character in this novel. They go out on one date and all of a sudden they are in love, and she’s just waltzing into his house like she lives there. Their relationship progressed way too fast and it came out of nowhere. Not only did I have a problem with the pacing of their relationship, but the story itself would jump ahead from one situation to the next within the same chapter, with little warning. Time seemed to speed by, and it left no time for me to get any grasp on the characters.

There are a bunch of errors in the book. There was even a part in the book where Dani’s parents are just hanging out in Mo’s house, without him even knowing. Dani and Mo show up to his house, get inside the front door, start making out, and all of a sudden Dani’s father is yelling at Mo for molesting his daughter. I am so confused as to why her parent’s were just hanging out in his house. He had never met them before, they had no idea who he was, and the whole thing just seemed misplaced. I kept thinking maybe I misread something and they were really at the B&B or something but after a few times reading the scene, I realized her parents were just randomly creeping around in her boyfriend’s house when they didn’t even know who he was.

This could have been a really great addition to the series but it’s random pacing and errors left me wanting to put it down more times than not. I didn’t connect with the characters, I didn’t like or understand their romance, and I just felt like the book never told Dani’s story. This ends on a rather big cliffhanger but even that can’t push me to read the next book in the series.

Risky Shot Bluegrass Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Kathleen Brooks Eric G Dove Laurens Publishing Books Reviews

The first book the characters were lacking but this book they are even worse. I was excited to read Mo's story but this story is just stupid. The author spends forever and a day explaining every little detail about what Dani goes through but this girl falls in love and talking marriage to Mo in a few days. EVERYTHING about this story was stupid. I couldn't make it pass 50% and even then I skipped the majority of the story. Ive heard of people falling hard and fast but the whole romance part of this story was just unrealistic. Mo was "burning" for her after one date. They were talking marriage within a week, her parents met him in week two, she didnt know even spoke Italian but her father is acting like him and Mo has known each other forever and discusses important Italian history in Italian. They just met the man, so how many conversations could they have had? Sorry I couldn't stomach anymore. I HATEd everything about this story. Even the format and editing is sh@@tty...ugh
After I finished Blue Grass State of Mind, I immediately ordered Risky Shot ( from my as I lay in bed—OMG you gotta love it!) Blue Grass State of Mind concluded with Danielle De Luca arriving on McKenna’s doorstep and I simply had to find out what she had been doing since she and McKenna Mason had gone their separate ways as they fled for their lives. After they left an upscale bar where they had celebrated Mckenna’s 29th birthday, they had stopped by Greendale, Thompson and Hitchem where they worked so McKenna could pick up a file that she and forgotten and Danielle could get her keys. McKenna had accidently interrupted an office party that had included rape and the possible death of a young woman.

The two women had known that the powerful people involved would not rest until they two were dead so they had quickly gotten out of town. McKeenna had ended up in Keeneston, Kentucky. Danielle had stayed around New York, laying low and gathering evidence to bring the criminals to justice.

After she arrives in Keeneston, she works with the FBI and law enforcement to nail down the bad guys. As she does the entire story of her months in New York, the danger she braved, the discomfort and sacrifice that she had endured to learn everything she could, is revealed.
She is enveloped by the town, just as McKenna had been and just as had happened with McKenna everyone knew what was happening, even before she did.

And of course there is a romantic interest. Mohtadi Ali Rahmen is a foreign prince who lives in Keeneston, and he has been given an ultimatum by his powerful father. He must marry someone of his own choice (who is acceptable) before a given date, or he has to accept an arranged marriage. Mohtadi has refused very woman that his father has delivered to his horse ranch in Kentucky. When he and Danielle meet there is an instant attraction, but when they learn that the criminals have tracked her to Keeneston their happiness is threatened.

This was a great story, but it ended with a cliff hanger that really ticked me off. I was really upset, but I HAD to know what happened next, so once again I downloaded Dead Heat, the third book in the series.
